The boy nodded. "So, mom went from fighting man to pretty man. Interesting." He said out loud before he could stop himself. His face washed over white and he froze. "So Dad you like the Rangers, the Astros are playin them soon, should be one hell of a game."

... Hold up a second. Not only did Rain actually have a man, but... he was a peacock?
Mendebras held up a hand to halt the boy's obviously-faked sports talk. "Who's this pretty man?"

Sarta shook his head, he'd really stepped into it now. "He's a cop, known mom for a long time. Since they were kids, he's not too weak, strong enough to hold his own I guess, not like there actually dating really just been dancin' around the subject for s'long as I could remember." It really wasn't any of his father's business, but the way he said it, Sarta had no will to challenge the man his mother called Too Strong.

So what was Mendebras supposed to say to that? Rain had the right to date whoever she wanted to date. Even if he was too cowardly to make a move and too wishy-washy to step up and make it permanent. Even if he was so much less than Rain deserved, so much less than she could get.
Mendebras picked up his burger and glanced at his son over it for a moment before he spoke. "What's his name?" Then he took a bigger bite than he'd intended and chomped it a little more angrily than he'd predicted.

Jr. as his family called him swallowed hard, he fidgeted with the corners of his napkin and laughed nerviously. "Um, well you see his name... his name is." He didn't want to tell his father, he really didn't want to, but the boy watched Mendebras eat, he was already pissed. He didn't want that rage directed at him, his mom could take care of herself. "His name is Sarta, he's a nice dude."

... There was more to this then Mendebras knew. Whoever this peacock was, he'd been in Rain's mind when she named her child. Years and years ago, while they were in Thailand, this peacock was still in her mind and in her heart. While she was the only woman on his mind, the only woman in his arms, she wanted someone else.
He wasn't angry at her, which surprised him. And he wasn't angry at the boy. He was angry with that stupid peacock. He couldn't even begin to explain it, but when his blood was boiling this hot, he wasn't exactly interested in explanations.
He tore off another chunk of his burger with his teeth and champed at it viciously. It was better than saying stupid empty words that couldn't compare to the reality of the situation.

Sarta gulped again and checked his watch. What was today's date, didn't he have something he had to do. Oh yeah, he had that thing, at that place with those people. "Hey I forgot pops." He said. "I was supposed to Spar with Emily today, it bein' Wednesday and all she'll be 'pectin' me... mom's probably at the Denny's or back at the gym. I'll see you later." He wrote down the address to the apartment on a napkin and headed out, he new better to stand in the line of fire.

So there was an Emily to spar with. Maybe all was not lost for the boy.
But all was lost for the other Sarta if Mendebras ever got his hands on him.
"Later, son," he said, keeping his gravely voice quiet so his rage wouldn't show as distinctly. He'd need to wait and see exactly how the situation was set up before he went barging around on faulty info. But if he found out that things were like he suspected, he would not be a happy camper.

Sarta found a payphone down the street and called Emily he really didn't have a sparring engagement no but that didn't mean his big sister figure wouldn't be game. That crazy girl was always up for some chill time, plus someone had to warn Big Sarta.

"Yo."
I was sitting on the couch and had to turn down Dogma so I could hear whoever was calling.

Sarta thanked whatever gave him the good fortune and said his hello. "Hey Emily you feel up to a spar at the park or a movie or something? Got a problem." He said leaning on the telephone with his shoulder, girls passed him by and they pointed giggling, he failed at looking cool. Can't be cool if ya blush.

"I'll be at the park in a few. Why, what's wrong?" I would do anything for that brother of mine I never technically had, and by the tone of his voice, it looked like a favor was in order. I stopped the DVD and pulled on my tennis shoes, still holding the receiver to my face with my shoulder.

Sarta laughed a little and shook his head saying on the phone. "Nawh we'll talk when you get here. Check ya later sis." And he hung up stuffing his hands into the pockets of his windbreakers. He hoped to get the word out before his dad found her dad.

I frowned at the phone before setting it down; Sarta being cryptic? What the hell was that about?
"Dad," I called up the stairs. "I'm taking your car!"
"Don't die or get a ticket," he called back. I grinned and locked the front door behind me.
The park wasn't very far; ten minutes at the most, on a day with traffic jams and every red light, and though I could have walked I wanted to be lazy. I commandeered a park bench by the pond and sprawled across it, watching the ducks.

Sarta made his way over to the bench with his hands stuffed in his pockets. "Hey Big Sis." He said moving over to sit where her feet were. "Met my dad today." He said taking a deep breath. "Probably the biggest, scariest dude I've ever seen."
