Sarta had the urge to look away under his father's gaze, his mother would say he had nothing to be ashamed of, but that was easier said. He did feel ashamed, he did feel defeated, he did feel weak.
Look at him Sarta.
Just look him in the eye! Have courage.
"I wasn't strong enough." He said with a longswallow, "I wasted all my energy, and I didn't last through the fight."

Mendebras was secretly proud to hear that the boy laid the blame squarely on himself. He could be taught what he'd done wrong and how to fix it, but to have the proper attitude of taking responsibility for his own improvement, that was something he couldn't be taught.
But that didn't mean Mendebras was going to let him off easy. In all honesty, though, he was probably being a lot nicer to the kid than he was to most everyone else. Including Rain.
"And how will you fix that in the future?"

Sarta thought for a moment turning only to spit out his mouth piece. It was a streagth problem, his speed was fine but when tired he lacked power behind his punches and the power to withstand such punches. "I have to train harder, build up a stronger body, I'll start on weight training tonight and I'll adapt my fighting style to be more fluid sir."
He moved to have his gloves removed and bowed his head. "How long you gonna be in town. You hungry I normally have a spar then get some grub next door before starting my workout."

It was going to be difficult for the kid to build up his strength without losing some of his speed, especially since it seemed like his speed came naturally and not from training. If he wasn't careful, he might get too bulky, see his speed go down, and not know how to train it back up to par. Hopefully his trainer would keep him on track.
Then again, perhaps Mendebras could come around here a little more often and supervise the boy's training himself. It would probably make the kid hate him all the more, but it would make him strong.
"Grub sounds good. I'll buy." He might as well, considering how much of the kid's raising Rain had paid for thus far.

Jr couldn't help but smile slipping on a t-shirt. This could be interesting. He was sure his father had some pretty good stories, and maybe he might get to know the man ad very few memories of. "Lets go then." He climbed out of the ring. "Uncle Gudo, you want something from Bozo's?" The old man chuckled and shook his head.
"Nawh Jr. You have fun." Sarta nodded and walked on leading his dad out.

Mendebras followed at the boy's heels. "You eat out a lot?"
Even he had to admit, it was a bit of a barbed question. It hinted at indulgence, at irresponsibility with money, at a lack of self-discipline, at misplaced priorities. Or it suggested affluence, comfort, the ability to spend where he wanted without concern.
Or it meant nothing. Either way.

The boy shook his head and stuffed his hands in his pockets. "Not really, only every once in awhile most of the time its with mom after a fight. Sort of a tradition, when we do its at Bozo's, best place in town." He opened the door and stepped to the side. "Started doin this bout the time I won my first match, mom gives me a little cash, takes me out and puts the rest in an account. Says I can't have it, says its for college." He shook his head and pointed to a booth in the far corner. "Thats our booth," He said motioning for his dad to go sit. "Don't think I'm the college sort though, I wanna go on a pilgramige maybe, test myself agisnt other fighters from different lands."
That was a lie. All he wanted to do was take over for his mom. Give the city its hero so she wouldn't have to take the fall anymore.

Mendebras sat down heavily on one bench of the booth. He usually chose free-standing tables when he had to come to places like this; the narrow benches and cramped foot space tended to cause a big guy like him problems. But if it was just the two of them, he should be able to sit not directly in front of the kid and thus avoid kicking him at every second.
"So. The life of a wandering fighter, huh?" Mendebras had to admit, even though he knew college was pretty essential for a young person trying to make a living wage in this country, he was a little proud to hear his son considering the same path his father had always walked. "That's a tough route to take. Unstable income, no solid assets, rented lodgings. And there'll come a day when your body'll force you to retire, and you'll have to hope you'll have saved up enough. Have you and your mom talked much about college?"

He nodded, his mom always tried to get him to think about college, but it was never really his bag. He thought for a moment and smiled "The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows. " He closed his eyes and breathed deep. "I am the son of Rain and yourself, I've been in the ring for as long as I can remember, I'm a fighter, the best I know is fighting, what would I do with college?"

Mendebras had to think carefully about his answer. Because all he could think of were the men he'd known who were injured in fights too big for them or got thrown out of their leagues for irresponsible fighting or just got too old to contend with the changing pool of opponents. They ended up in various places: screaming at nurses who tried to get them out of bed for their grueling physical therapy, brawling with fellow prisoners in the county jail, begging on the streets covered in dirt and grime and the spit of the uncaring masses. There was no good end to a life of fighting.
But scare tactics were notorious for failing when it came to teenagers.
"Even if you don't think you'll need college later, it's a backup plan. And it's better to get your backup plan set up long before you actually need it. While your mom can still help you out and you don't have too many responsibilities. I didn't go to college, and someday I imagine I'll regret it when I'm too old and worn down to win the money I need."
Of course, that might not happen. Because even when he was old and his bones creaked, Mendebras knew he would still be able to floor the best of them. But not everyone could rely on a power to sustain them.

The boy nodded and leaned back while the waiter placed waters infront of them he ordered a Vegi-burger with fries. Surprise father your son is a vegitarian and a Buddist. "I'll think about it." He said with all sensarity. He tapped his fingers for a moment in thought, at the very least he owed it to his mother right?
"So old man, what about you? I bet you got some stories."

Mendebras could guess exactly which story the boy was referring to. The story of where exactly his father had been all these years when Rain was having to raise her son alone. The story of why he hadn't been there for the boy's first words, first steps, first fights. The story of how on earth a negligent father could explain himself.
Of course, that was a story Mendebras had no intention of telling.
"Looks like there's a story you should be telling me first," Mendebras remarked instead, nodding to the fru-fru hippie crap on the boy's place, pitiful and unappetizing compared to the double-stacked burger sitting in front of Mendebras. "That a veggie burger?"

Sarta nodded, "Yes, I uh, don't eat meat." He said. "Religious purposes." He smiled and laughed. "Thats what you get for having a child in Thailand." Ok so his mother didn't think it was a funny joke ,but hell it was his perogetive. He knew the question was being dodged and he desided to let it go for now.
He wasn't angry at his father, he'd decided a long time ago that anger wasn't worth the energy.

"Religious purposes. So you're, what, Buddhist?"
Honestly, Mendebras had known--and trained under--too many upstanding Buddhists to be concerned that his son had decided to join their ranks. And of all the religions to espouse, it would be the one he would be least likely to try to shove down people's throats. It wasn't very zen, after all.

The boy nodded with a shy smile. "Yes sir." He said taking a drink of water. "Keeps me centered."
