Mendebras didn't even try to suppress a snort. It wasn't religion that kept a man centered. But if religion's the name the boy wanted to attach to it, that was his choice.
"So if you're not aiming for college, how are you doing in high school?" And if the boy said he was slacking off because it didn't matter, he was in for the punishment of his life. If Mendebras had anything to say about it, the kid wouldn't be doing anything halfway.

The boy smiled, somehow he knew this was going to come, did the man have a right to ask? Maybe, Maybe not but it wasn't in Sarta's nature to be snide. "Good, actually." He answered, "Mom's rules, If I can't get A's and B's I can't fight. She's almost milltant about it."

Mendebras nodded as he took a massive bite of his massive burger. If Rain had been pressing the boy to go to college, it stood to reason that she wouldn't tolerate bad grades in high school either. Good for her. And if the boy was still fighting, it meant he was meeting those grade expectations. Good for him.
The next question made Mendebras glad he didn't have problems with tact.
"What about girls? One, or many?"

The son of Mendebras almost choked on his burger and he grabbed for the water, a deep red blush spreading over his entire face and sinking down his arms and neck. "I uh... well, um that is to say." He wished he could tell his dad that he was the big man, he had girls standing in line, but he didn't. That by no means meant that he didn't like girls, gosh no. Everytime he tried to say something, his words tied up around themselves, he would panic and say something totally dorky.
The boy looked down, "No sir." He said quietly, he was always a bundle of nerves when it came to girls, he wished he could be cool like Uncle Asaph's friend Spark. That guy had it made or maybe Sarta, girls always smiled, and whispered and giggled when he was around. They found him awkward. "Free time is spent training anyhow." there that had the potinal to save his dignity right?

Goodness, if the boy was already a vegetarian, Mendebras couldn't be certain he wasn't gay too. And that cut Mendebras to the core. What if his son, his only son, the only continuation of his genes, wanted to waste it all swordfighting with some nancy boy?
Mendebras set his burger down so he could focus on keeping his voice level. It wouldn't do any good to snap at the boy now and then never hear the truth. "You're not gay, are you?"

The boy shook his head with vigor. "No sir... I like chicks. Its just. I mean, talking to a girl isn't like punching a guy in the face." He said trying to explain his girl problems. "If you haven't noticed I wasn't raised with anyone to show me any kind of tact. "

Mendebras tried to keep a straight face, but it was no use; he threw his head back and roared with laughter. "Your mother always was the kind to punch first and ask questions later. Why don't you invite the girls you know to the gym as an icebreaker, then?"

Sarta lifted an eyebrow, invite them to the gym? And do what? And that thing with mom? His over active imagination kicked in and he felt his stomatch jump. That was not cool! "I don't really know any girls, sept my cousins and Emily and they aint girls."

"Well, there's your problem, boy!" Mendebras guffawed. "Won't ever get girls if you don't meet 'em. What, you don't talk to the girls at your school?"

He shook his head. "No, not really.... I uh." He rubbed the back of his head and laughed nerviously. "Theres a lot of cute girls too... and its not like I don't try I do, its just when I try to talk no words come out and then they giggle and I say the first thing in my head... normally something that makes me look like a dork." He blushed.

Was he blushing? Good grief, that was just painful to watch. Mendebras shook his head and took another bite of his burger to avoid embarrassing the boy further. Was he actually going to have to try to teach his son to talk to girls? How ridiculous would that look, considering how Mendebras met Rain in the first place. It certainly wasn't a tactic he planned to teach to his son.
"Do you at least like school?"

He shrugged. "Its alright, weight room is nice, Coaches want me on power lifting, and wrestling, but it'd take away my gym time." He finished up his burger and went for the fries. "Football coach wants me too, but don't know much about the sport."

"Wouldn't be hard to learn. You'd be good at it, too. Besides, if you're already going to the gym from time to time, and your school activities would still be physical, it's not a net loss."

Sarta nodded and rolled his shoulder a little. "Its worth thinking about anyhow." Then the boy thought about it, he had no clue how his mother and father met, every time he asked, his mom would do that little nervious thing of hers and change the subject. Wh secretat was the big secret. "Hey uh dad, How did you and mom meet?"

It was amazing how much middle ground there was between the truth and the whole truth.
"The fighting circuit," Mendebras answered. "Did a lot of sparring and a lot of fighting in earnest. Your mom was out to prove something back then, and Thailand was a place where nobody asked questions. We both liked that about it."
