He looked strong. Perhaps not as strong as Mendebras might have hoped, but certainly strong enough to hold his own when it mattered. And he was in school, which was worth something. And he showed respect to his family.
And he remembered his father. That was worth more than Mendebras had predicted.
"She just left, actually," Mendebras answered. Beyond that, beyond the mere facts, he really didn't know what to say. This was his own son, his only son, his own flesh and blood, the proof of his strength, the man who would someday replace him in this world. What could mere words do to encompass that?
For a lack of anything better, he extended his hand to the boy. Men shook hands, and he wanted the boy to be a man.

Sarta looked at the man's hand, it looked exactly the same, monstrously huge and scarred along the knuckles, a fighter's hand, much like his own would be one day, and he took this man, his father's hand and it didn't swallow his like it had when he was just a kid. He gave a firm grip, something to tell his father that he wasn't a little kid anymore. "When did you get here?" There were so many questions he wanted to ask, why did he let them go? Where had he been? Why didn't he write, call, anything at all to show he cared?
Sarta let go of his hand and stepped back. "I uh... have some training to do." the boy didn't know what to say, what do you say to a father you haven't seen in 10 years?

"Mind if I watch?" Mendebras replied. "Have yet to see you fight."

Sarta nodded slowly. "Sure thing." He said taking off his hoody then grabbing the tape for his fists. He slipped in a mouth guard and stepped into the ring. Gudo walked in after him with a grin. "Lets keep it light for starters, give you a bit of a warm up, then we'll get down to business." the old man instructed and Sarta nodded moving in, fist up face down feet working to keep away from the veteran's reach.

Mendebras folded his arms over his chest and walked over to the ring to watch. This was gonna be interesting on more than one level. Not only could he see what sort of man his son was becoming, but he would also see what sort of person was training Rain these days.

Sarta kept his footwork tight and calculated, feinting to the left and to the right when his big brawler uncle threw his punches. He was quick to counter hitting his Gudo in the ribs, getting inside the big man's arms and doing as much damage as he could before dancing out of his reach. He was clocked in the jaw and in the chest a couple of times, but he kept going Sarta was built too lean to be an in-fighter or a swarmer, he couldn't just rely on knock out punches and hard right hooks, he had to outlast and out move his opponets, wear them down and then move in for a K.O. which also meant he had to learn to take a punch.

Sarta definitely fought differently than his father. Lots of footwork, lots of fakes, and lots of punches to his own jaw. At least the kid knew how to take a punch, which was good. He was tough and he was strong, but he was also fast, and that was something Mendebras had to give credit to. Now it would just remain to be seen if he could give Gudo the runaround long enough to win the fight.

His big uncle had to chase him around the room, Sarta was just looking for an opportunity, but before he'd get it he'd have to soften the man up a little, and there it was after a long dance around the ring, Gudo swung and Jr ducked getting in the man's arms and slug his chin with all the force his body could put behind him, the man was thrown back a bit and the son of Mendebras jabbed with his left then his right throwing his old uncle to the ropes.

Mendebras lifted his chin and had to admit that he felt some pride at that shot. That was a slick move the kid executed. Mendebras had to wonder how he fared against faster fighters who could get away from shots like that. Perhaps he would see another of the kid's fights and see how he did. But for now it looked like he was relying on his speed like he should and was well on his way to beating his much larger opponent.
As long as he didn't screw it up.

Gudo was surprised, real surprised and he came back up with a shake of his head to clear the cobwebs just barily dodging a pretty good hit from Jr and he threw a devastating blow toward his face satisfied when he heard the crunch of the young man's nose.
Sarta for his part fell backward with clenched eyes feeling the blood come out, he couldn't smell a thing and his eyes teared up. He knew it was broken. Out of the corner of his eye he saw his mountain of a father standing there, the man was beyond strong, he was downright unbeatable, but even then what would he think if he saw Jr just walk out of the ring, or even let the pain slow him down, or act like it hurt at all? Jr. started up again ignoring the blood it'd clot soon anyways then he'd set it and he made his way to his uncle circling around looking for another weak spot.
Jr. didn't even know why he cared, what had that man ever done for him to make him so worried about what he thought? He had every right to be angry. He had every right in the world to be furious at seeing the man here after ten long years of mom busting her ass to do for him, alone.
Gudo got him then and Sarta was knocked down he got up in time for the count but then again he shouldn't have gotten hit in the first place. "Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." He thought and took a deep breath and went again clearing his mind of all but this, he was able to get at his uncle again this time a few well placed kidney punches before the man countered with a punch of his own hitting that nose again cause Jr left it open.
The boy howled in pain staggering back almost falling to the matt, but he got up again this time very dizzy something in his head told him that he couldn't stop, but the pain was so sharp if he quit now Gudo would only win on a TKO it wouldn't be as if he actually handed him the match. But Mendebras was here, and he didn't want to look weak to his father.
It all came down to that really. He wanted to show his father that he wasn't the little kid he was when he left, he was well on his way to being a man. "You wanna quit there JR?" His uncle asked a little worried with good cause. Jr stood up straight and shook his head, he'd get Gudo for that.

Mendebras recognized that look. It shouted determination and daring and even pride. The kid wasn't about to sit by and accept anyone's charity. He had something to prove and he knew it, and that was always a good motivator. Now he would just have to actually do the proving.
Mendebras still didn't speak. The last thing the kid needed was to think his father was intervening on his behalf. He needed to win or to lose on his own. Not ony because it was necessary, but because he wanted it that way.

Sarta shrugged his shoulders and started again this time getting the jump for his speed which was always gonna be his main weapon, he used a one, two three on the old man and because of his reflexes being as fast and as strong as they were he was able to dodge and counter his next move. Sarta jumped out of the way and so the chase began anew. His nose was clotting again the pain was getting easier to ignore. Just maybe he dared to think he might be able to win this.

Mendebras was starting to think there was more going on in the boy's head than he had presumed. He wasn't getting angry about his injuries and putting that intensity into his moves. But he wasn't getting lackadaisical and overconfident in his successes and making stupid mistakes. He wasn't acting like he felt anything at all about it, to be honest. But that wasn't stopping him from continuing the fight. He didn't look obviously invested in it, but he was still doing it. Which meant that he fought for no other reason than the fact that it was what he did. He fought because he fought, and he didn't need more explanation than that. It was an interesting state of mind. Mendebras could almost admire it when he looked at it in a certain light. He would wait to give the kid props until he saw if that mental state would win him the fight.

So the fight went on as it was till Sarta and the old man were cought in a clench trying to get at each other's kidneys and rips, exhausted as can be the fight almost slowed to a halt and Sarta's speed had left him, thats how it happened the old man now looking as if he'd been ran over by a train shoved the young man off him and slammed his fist into his chest.
Sarta fell like a stone and the count went up, he tried to get up but he just couldn't. His right eye swollen almost shut, nose broken, jaw boozed chest bruised and beaten. He came so close too. When he finally got to his feet he knew he'd failed to convince his father of his streagth, he didn't bother hanging his head. He gave one hell of a performance.
His mother would tell him he had nothing to be ashamed of, he just had to keep at it.

So there was his weakness. When both fighters are tired and slowing down, a strong man can still throw a strong punch. But a fast man doesn't have any strength to offer once the speed is gone. In the end, hardy strength always bested flashy speed when patience and skill were applied as they should always be.
The kid looked like hell, but he wore his hell better than Mendebras thought he might. But that didn't mean he didn't need a little prod in the right direction. A tasteful loser was still a loser.
Mendebras lifted his chin so his voice would carry up to the ring. "What'd you do wrong, boy?"
