Brandon was out.
Tony approached, letting out a long, slow whistle as he bent down to check the boy for permanent damage. "I appreciate what you do, Red. Really, I do, but this--a little bit of overkill, you think? He was weak enough to cuff before you kicked him, I bet. Gotta spend time getting him to a hospital now."

I turned so he could see the gash and pointed to it. "I warned him. Kids these days are just too damn stupid for their own good." I shook my head. "Now he wont give you no guff, be a nice quiet trip to the station." Tough kid, normally didn't give me so much trouble the young ones. almost made me feel old. Almost. "If it'll make you feel better Tony I'll take it easy next time."

"He'll bounce back, Red. Just try to check your anger." He laid a hand on her shoulder and patted it, smiling grimly. "You were a dumb kid once, too."
"The paramedics are coming," said Officer Riley from behind them. "They'll look this guy over and send him on down to the station. Let's get these two others booked." He nodded to Rain. "Red. Good to see you."

I smiled, and shrugged. I did have an anger problem, he was right. I whipped my face again. "Dito." I answered the cop. "You guys need somethin else fore I hit the road?"

I looked over at what was going and like to see those guys placed in the squad car, but one was really bloody up. I saw the women and figured it was her. I laugh to myself.

"Nah, we're good," Big Tony replied. "Take care, Red."
Sarta shut the car door after Brandon joined his fellow thieves in the back. He flashed Rain a grateful smile.

Of all the times too look over toward the right over the squad car. I couldn't help it. I smiled back, "Good work, would have been hell chasing those fools around the city myself." I told them hiding the way my brain was spinning, he made me feel so many things when he smiled my way.
Rain... get hold of yourself, you're not allowed.
I nodded and swallowed hard before saluting with two fingers. "I'm gone now, you all be careful." I was gone, it was still light I could go finish that bonding time with the last Gunji.

Dad was a little more bruised than usual when he came home from work later that night.
I had already taken my obligatory shower for his dander allergy and was lying on the couch with a copy of Time I'd swiped from Charlie's desk at the shelter when he walked in, trying to hide a limp and a nasty bruise on his arm. I threw down the magazine and sat up. "Are you okay?" I asked.
He waved me back down. "Fine, Emily."
"You look like you were in a fight."
"I landed wrong on a kid's back," he said.
"A kid?"
"A...big kid," he explained, using his hands for emphasis. "High speed chase for three thieves about your age. One of them was a linebacker or something. Him and another one ran. Flew into him. He'd jumped a fence."
"Daaamn. Dinner's on the table, by the way. Did you call Mom for backup?"
He sighed and limped into the kitchen. "Yeah."
I flipped over and watched him over the armrest of the couch. "Have you asked her yet?"
He tossed me a wry glance. "I can't exactly ask the Red Fox in the middle of a bust, can I?"
"Chop chop, Dad," I commanded, grinning.
He shut the fridge and drank milk from the carton. "Soon, Emily. Ahhh." He wiped his mouth and set the carton back in the fridge. "Listen, why don't you take Jr out tomorrow night to bowl?"
"You gonna ask her then?"
"Maybe."
"Sweet." I flopped back down on the couch. "Love you, Dad."
"I love you too, Emily."
He tousled my hair and went upstairs with his food. I went back to my Time.

I got home when Jr. was asleep, didn't mean to miss our whole night together, after the bust there was a car wreak, after that there was a mugging, and I did have a job to do. I yawned and covered the boy up with a throw blanket we kept on the back of the couch. Poor boy must have waited up for me. I sat down next to him and pulled off my boots.
He looked just like his father. I noticed for the nth time and I smiled, my strong boy. I grabbed dinner and went to bed. Damn city took it all from you.

I saw everyone part their ways and I placed my gun back in my jackets inner pocket and started up my bike and drove by everyone, who did not seem to notice me. No body ever notices me. I shook my head kept on driving. I thought 'my life seems like a waste' but I knew that me dieing would be hard on Hagi and I could not put him through that so i tossed that thought from my mind and headed back to the apartment.

Not that I think I have the right to snoop into my dad's love life, but...
Wait, that's wrong. I'm rather vague on the rights of children jutting their noses into their parents' business, but if there is a line not to be crossed, I've probably crossed it at some point in my life and really, I couldn't care less.
Yes, I was hanging outside of my dad's bedroom door and eavesdropping as he punched in the number to Mom's phone. No, I didn't care what it looked like. It's been a long-held belief of mine that if my dad wasn't such a dunce there wouldn't be any of this useless tension between him and Rain Gunji. They needed to hurry up and smash, dang it. Junior and I were practically siblings, anyway. We'd been friggin' raised together by a single parent each who cared about the other one.
Speaking of which, I probably should've gotten him in on a plan to throw them together a long time ago.
Whatever, brain. Just listen.

Couldn't sleep, it was a weird thing lately, well not lately really I hadn't had a decent night sleep since I don't know when. No I was on the rythem bag, couldn't beleive I'd actually kissed him. What the hell was I thinking? Nothing good could come of it, he had a little girl to think of, no telling how many scum bags in the city wanted me dead.
The phone rang and I checked the caller ID, and I practically lept on it. "Peacock?" I answered that being my standard for him. "Whats happenin'?" Mary Mother of Christ was that ever lame, how come I can't just say hello when someone calls me. So damn smooth.

I could almost hear the grin in my dad's voice. "Hey, Red," he said casually. "I was wondering if you were free today at, oh, I dunno...lunchtime?"
A spider crawled across the carpet, illuminated by the sliver of light at the bottom of the door. It was one of those long-legged cellar spiders. I thought about smacking it with my fist, but a second's hesitation had me doing what any daughter raised by Sarta the Buddhist would do: I shooed it away. It scuttled under the door and vanished.

I nodded walking through the house suddenly very thirsty I rumaged through the fridge for the milk... if Jr. ever cought me doing this I'd never hear the end of it. I drank from the jug, so sue me as I thought about what to say. I couldn't hide could I? I chuckled a bit returning the milk. "Sure thing, I just gotta develop and drop off a role of film from last night and I'm good to go for the day. Anywhere in particular?"

"There's this place off Fairview Drive called Diva's I went to once. Ever been there?"
My eyes widened. Dude, that place was awesome. Diva's was in the heart of the Money Bin and had a view of the Gulf. What kind of money did Dad have right now?
