He was becoming an amazing fighter. I watched my son as focused as he was work his opponent down, he was participating in two weeks in a tournament for his age and class, the money would mostly go into the bank, I wanted him to go to school, be better then his roughneck mother and uncle. He ducked just barely missing the hook to his head and he brought his elbow up slamming the man's chin and he came again with kidney punches, he learned that from his mama. I grinned. Always hit that kidney, one good punch there and its over.
He was gonna be a strong man one day.
He wasn't an aggressive fighter, he moved the way a fighter should, like water he tried to not tense up so he could counter or dodge or block, he was pulled into a clench and tried to bring up his thigh to trap the other man's arm while he tried to punch the man again in the kidney.
He was doing good, and he normally spent most of his free time here, I guess with parents like me and... I guess he had to love to fight he didn't have much of a choice in the matter. He'd never be as strong as his father, but he'd be stronger then most and he'd be able to protect himself and his loved ones, he'd never have to be afraid walking the streets. I watched his opponent fall and struggle to get up, the count went up thanks to Gudo and it was over.
As if the fight could end any other way, that was MY son there. He raised his hand and helped the other man up spitting out his mouth guard. He climbed out of the ring grinning feeling pretty good about himself and I patted his back. “You did good boy... think you'll be ready next week?”
“Always ready Mama.” He answered with the confidence of a Gunji.
“Don't get pig headed boy,” I said playfully jabbing at his jaw. “Come on kid lets grab some grub.” The boy nodded and got changed into jeans and a Ted Nugent shirt I'd let him have and we were walking to Bozo's talking of all the great ones, boxers who were near unstoppable stylists and how school was doing. Hey hero's are allowed to enjoy themselves sometimes.
“Mama, can I ask you something?”
I shrugged with my hands in my pockets. “Shoot kid go on ahead.”
“When are you gonna start dating? You never go out and just have fun, I'm not a little kid no more mom, you are allowed to relax.” I shook my head, why the hell was he bringing this up again.
“You know why son, it ain't safe and it aint responsible, people could get hurt.”
The boy shook his head kicking a discarded can, “One date, for one night couldn't hurt ya, if you keep on like ya do Mama yer gonna get hurt.” I laughed it off, the boy was too smart for his own good sometimes.
“Nobody gonna hurt me son, you can count on that, it'd take one hell of a bad ass to get the pinch on me!”
“Mom it aint about that, when you just gonna relax.”
“Aint no time to relax son. Now lets just drop this, how'd that history test go?” I knew the boy wasn't happy but heck how the hell was I supposed to date, I had a city to protect, a son to care for, a job to not get fired from, competitions to win and I hadn't dated in years, I was always too damn busy.
All it took was letting your guard down once and BAM, it all came down, everything you built was trashed, dating would just be another way of saying “My life isn't fucked enough, kill someone I care about.” I aint gonna do it.
"Did good mom, got a B." I grinned the boy was really going somewhere.
"You think I can help you one night?" He asked with those big eyes, he really wanted to join the family business but it just wasn't time yet, I wasn't about to lose my little boy. I shook my head and the boy's shoulder's slumped I let out a sigh.
"How bout we go to the arcade, just got paid, what do ya say?" He lit up and I grinned. The boy was just too much, one moment he's down in the dumps and the next he's walkin on air.
