Madeline was the first of the Veratis besides Asaph to notice Darmstadt Wolfe's appearance to the party, but only because the fair-haired investor beside him was so bangin' hot.
Too bad she'd been instructed to stay with one of her family members throughout the party's duration. For the past hour, she'd chosen her uncle Abel. He was fun. He was also the one cutting the cake and filling up on it, the one who would be the first to do something outrageous, the one she could most easily give the slip when he wasn't looking.
There, several yards away, was her aunt Sky sitting on the edge of the fountain, and beyond that the trails Madeline could escape to if she was stealthy enough. She didn't want to be here all night at this boring party--there had to be something else going on in the world, something she could be doing that was more productive than being baby-sat. Surely she could think of something once she was out.

Sawley smirked fleetingly at Darmstadt and drained the rest of his wine glass before sauntering over to the refreshment table, one hand in his pocket. Goodness, she was just the cutest thing he'd ever seen. So energetic and lively and youthful. Too bad he couldn't meet a sweet thing like her back when he was in college; they would have brought the whole school down around their professors' ears.
Didn't mean they wouldn't have a ton of fun now, though. Right under her father's nose, no less. How hot was that?
"Hey," he greeted her with a crooked grin. "You look bored and a half."

Madeline's eyes widened just slightly at the unexpected attentions of previously noted hot guy from Darmstadt's company. Or did he own his own? Madeline couldn't remember everybody her father could. "I am like you wouldn't believe."

"Oh, I bet I would," Sawley disagreed, setting his empty glass on the table and picking up a new one, a full one. Forget that whole half-empty versus half-full debate; when your glass is always full, you're always optimistic. "So what are two bored partygoers gonna do with ourselves? What is there to keep us busy, madam hostess?"

Abel glanced up from the snacks, instantly watchful of his favorite niece. He recognized Sawley's voice even before he saw who it belonged to, and then the pit dropped out of his stomach. Asaph was going to kill him.
Madeline picked up a chocolate cupcake and rotated it in her hands. "There's not much to do around here, unfortunately. There's the garden--but Dad's locked up the house 'cause he doesn't want anybody else in there."
"Because we'd hide in your room playing video games," interjected Abel. He was quite aware that he walked now on eggshells, caught between Sawley Russert and his own older brother, built like the steel of his company. He didn't want to disturb either of them, but he couldn't do anything without stepping on the toes of either one.

Spark looked down with a smile and his last sip of wine. Two glasses, that's the limit for Longbow. He was here to talk to Ace about the coming elections but it was lost in friendly small talk, and with the ADD he was now distracted from what he was gonna say. "Just Dandy, Ma'am. And you don't look like you've had a bad night in your life."

I made my way to Asaph, better get permission before taking the camera out, but really I was here to visit my father's sister, tell her I placed a rose on his grave for her today. What had it been now 18 or so years, plus how could I not come visit my favorite aunt... ok my only aunt.

Asaph caught sight of his cousin's approach and smiled familiarly despite the way a few of his guests glanced sharply at her back. "Rai--bringing in the cameras already?" He held out a glass to her. He'd heard that motorcycle of hers shutting off in the driveway, and she looked more suited to a bar than a party, but what did that matter? In the end, she was family. And he wasn't going to apologize for taking in family, even the ones that made it their lot to embarrass him.

I nodded to him with a sheepish smile. "Well I do need to do my job Ace, um after I get done here is it alright if I go visit Aunt Cenna?" What you don't walk into someone's house without permission, it just aint right.
"And a picture of you and Mr. Long wouldn't be too bad."

Nicaea let her smirk be her answer as her finger traced the rim of her glass. This Spark boy was certainly a character, and he was just so cute. She could just eat him up. And she had already gotten permission from the one opinion that mattered, so nothing was in her way except the silly niceties of polite conversation. If she could just get him alone, it would be all over.
But now some shabby reporter was trying to divert his attention. How dare she come between the Nazgul and her prey. With a casual grin she patted Spark's arm. "Another photo op, eh? You just can't get a spare moment, can you?"
Sawley ignored Abel and kept his eyes on Madeline and her slender little fingers toying with that cuppycake. He didn't have time for the likes of Abel anyway, especially not here. "Sounds like your dad's a bit of a control freak. He ever try to keep you from doing stuff you wanna?"

Spark chuckled a bit setting his empty glass down. "Such is life." He said moving closer to his friend, now that he was thinking about running for mayor he couldn't say no to a photo op it'd be bad practice. "Of Course I trust Ms. Rai here will get my good side." Ok so the joke was older then him, who cared? It was still a good one.

"Alla time," said Madeline, grimacing slightly. "Between him and Laura, you'd think this place was run by the military."
Oops, better change the subject. It wouldn't do for the hostess to keep talking about herself. "But enough about me. You look bored, too."
Abel couldn't keep the slight panic from his face once he realized that Madeline was going to try to sneak off again. And if she did, Asaph's wrath would be primarily directed on the little brother he told to keep a watch on her. That gleam in little Maddie's eye meant Abel's imminent destruction.

Asaph clapped a hand on Spark's shoulder and turned to Rain. "Sure," he said. "On both counts. Mom would love to see you."

I smiled nodding to the two men, Mr. Long was always a sight, he was a very attractive man so I couldn't help but laugh at his attempt at humor. I snapped the picture and thanked them before moving about the crowd for about 5 and I headed upstairs to see who I actually came to see.
I knocked on the door carefully just in case. "Aunt Ce, Can I come in?"

Nicaea waited a little impatiently for the reporter to finish her front-page-grubbing before she sidled back to Spark's side and brushed her fingers against his arm. "You're sure a popular man tonight. How do you get any time to yourself?"
Sawley grinned and took a sip from his new glass. "I'm never really bored. I try to find fun everywhere I can." He glanced back over his shoulder to make sure Asaph wasn't looking before he stepped closer to Madeline and lowered his voice. "You know of anywhere I could find some fun?"

Spark moved away from his buddy when the woman was gone and smiled to the one at his arm. "Oh I make do." He said reaching up to loosen his tie a little, summer was coming in wasn't no doubt about it. "So what do you do, M'lady when you need some alone time?" He asked the humor never leaving. He did have fun with his life.
