"Well, I'm hoping to salvage something tomorrow morning," Madeline replied, leaning into his shoulder. "I don't exactly want to alienate my family. But if I can't then I'll call you tomorrow. And I wouldn't mind staying at your place if I can't go home. Before I do I'm gonna try and talk my dad into calming down. I'm sorry about all this."

"Oh, sweetie, don't apologize," Sawley said with a smile, brushing his lips fleetingly against her forehead and tightening his arm around her. "I'm stickin' with ya no matter what. You can stay with me as long as you want to."
Sawley didn't bother asking himself why he was going so far out of his way for this pretty little girl. Because she was pretty. That was all the necessary rationale.

Now that she recognized her bad judgment (but still didn't think arguing with her cousin had any point to it), there was nothing really to do about it. She told herself it would be okay and toyed with his collar.
Sawley was fun and cute and everything she loved to hang out with. And for the rest of the night, she wasn't going to drag him down any more. And then in the morning she would be in all the trouble she couldn't stand and then some, but she would deal with it then.
"Dang you're cute," she said, not realizing she'd said it out loud.

Sawley snickered and touched his nose to hers. "And you're sweet. Does that make us even?"
She was young enough to be his daughter. He hit drinking age the year she hit existence. But she was so gentle and so soft and it felt like she was molded to fit in his arms. For some reason she felt special, unique, precious, worthy to be cherished. And looking at that silky blond hair spilling over his arms around her, feeling those slender fingers playing with his collar, listening to that lovely voice filling his ears... Sawley felt a tenderness he couldn't attach to anything he'd experienced before. He wanted to hold her forever, to wrap her in his arms and in the finest dresses he could buy and in his soft cotton sheets. If she would agree to stay with him, he would be the happiest little clam in the bunch.

Madeline blushed a nice embarrassed pink and looked up at him while her nose burrowed into his sleeve. Her eyes crinkled in a smile. "Yeah, that makes us even," she said.

Sawley let his grin split his face in half. "I love equality," he replied and gently kissed her temple.
Then the lights of the theater were shining through the taxi windows. Sawley dug a bill from his pocket and handed it to the driver. "Come on back in a couple hours and you can take me home, 'kay?"
The bill was about three times the fare. Refusing the return trip was nowhere near the driver's mind.
Sawley opened the door and offered Maddie his hand. "C'mon, let's go find something fun to watch and get some foodination."
Did this technically count as a date? It was more a weird time-spending tactic trying to salvage a crazy crazy day. Was it okay to call that a date? He really wished it was. A day was only as crazy as you decided it was. Sometimes it was just kooky and out of the ordinary, which was sometimes just what you needed.
