I was already downstairs when the knock came. Dad started to get up from the couch, but I waved him back down as I jogged past him.
He shot me a look of disbelief. "You're going out in that?" he asked.
I paused and turned on my heel in one swift motion. "Yeah. It's pretty."
"I thought you didn't like shiny."
"Normally I don't," I replied. "But this shirt is different. This one's okay to be shiny. And crimson. And comfortable. I hate sequins, not shiny in general."
"Ah." Dad waved me off, once more enthralled by the TV.
I yanked open the door and grinned. "Hi, Daire," I said.

... Shiny. Very shiny. And very red. And very... um... what was the right word for drawing attention to the area upon which polite gentlemen did not let their attention linger?
Tempting. Right. This was not going to be easy.
"Um... y-y-y, y-you, um, you look very pretty, E-Emily," he managed to stammer. Now, if only that trial was proof enough of his mettle. But of course, the entire gauntlet awaited. And every single stage was fraught with the worst dangers.
"Um... a-are you ready to go?" Stiffly he gestured toward his car parked at the curb. Where he would be sitting close beside her alone and taking her somewhere where he'd be expected to make conversation and being interesting and charming and there was no way he was going to survive this. He could already feel his hands starting to shake and his neck starting to sweat and his chest getting tight. This was not going to go well.

"Yep. Do you know where we're going?" I shut the door behind me and started walking toward his car. It was a simple question, but I realized after I'd asked that it might send him into another stuttering spree. Hopefully, by the end of tonight, I'd show him that I wasn't anything to be worried about.

"Um..." Daire remembered to keep pace with Emily with his feet while his mouth struggled to catch up. "I-I, um... I guess it depends. Wh-what do you like to... y'know, eat?"
Daire would just have to hope his meager knowledge of the city's interesting locales would suffice tonight. He never ate out on his own--well, or with anyone else, for that matter. Hopefully he could think of somewhere to take her that she wouldn't find completely terrible. He wanted this to go well so badly.
... Except if it went well, it would have to happen again, or she would think he didn't like her. Geez, why was all of this so complicated and horrifying? It was like walking on eggshells through a mine field while being sniped at and chased by bears during a lightning storm.
