I clenched my jaw yet tried to keep my thinly-veiled temper from getting me in trouble again. "Who hasn't?" And if my tone was a bit on the defensive side, too bad. I'd had enough people think they were smarter than me, sneakier than me, better than me. What was she after? A confession? You want to take me to a stage and admit out in the open that yes, I am a freak, and no, I'm not going to join the metahuman research project? If this woman was one of those people trying to pitch me into a 'voluntary' study, I'd punch her in the face. I'd been messed with too many times in the past because 'normal' people want to help me with my condition.

Okay, I guess she has...and is, judging by her reaction. "Whoa...Easy. It's not that big of a deal if you are. Everybody has differences. Hell, I grew up in a lab." I held my hands up in a peaceful gesture. "Don't lose your feathers, and I won't lose my fur, k?" I chuckled halfheartedly, watching the girl with caution and hoping I was fast enough to jump out of the way if she threw a fist at me.

Sarta Jr. Wasn't trying to listen he really wasn't... but damn it was kinda hard when you were right there. He decided to pipe up. "Hey, how much for that puppy?" He asked loud enough for both to hear pointing to a cage on the floor. "What kind you think it is?"

I froze. And stared. And then I looked around to make sure nobody was watching this fools' conversation about being metahuman in the middle of public.
I nearly jumped out of my skin at that kid's voice. "Hundred," I replied automatically. I scratched the back of my jacket irritably, trying to calm down. "Sorry. One hundred fifty." And then I turned back to the other meta and gave a meaningful look that I hoped expressed the message, Don't talk about this here.

Sarta nodded pulling his wallet and paid the money for the little German looking pup. "Thanks. Anything I need to fill out or something? I've never done this."

The high-pitched mew in Daire's pocket made him jump, just like it had every time he'd heard it. These poor little things needed to get something to eat, and quick. Not just because they were obviously hungry and needed some kindness, but because listening to their piteous cries was fraying Daire's already hypertense nerves. And now that he'd already picked them up, there was no turning back; he needed to make sure they were well taken care of.
That was the only reason he would even consider venturing into this crazy madhouse of a fundraiser. There were too many people around, too many faces, too many voices. Daire wanted nothing more than to turn around and leave this place as quickly as he'd come. But he couldn't go before he'd found out if this fundraiser could direct him to a place where he could buy some milk for the poor hungry things in his pockets.
How on earth could anyone just abandon kittens, anyway?
Daire's steps slowed the closer he got to the woman who seemed to be working this event. She was... well, she was gorgeous, honestly, and so was the woman she was talking to. Why did Daire always have to be so intimidated by everyone he came in contact with?
"Um... e-excuse me," he stammered, coming to a halt a good distance from them, far enough that he feared they might not even hear him. It was almost the preferable outcome; if they didn't even turn his way, maybe he could slip out unnoticed and find some other way to get these kittens the food they needed.

God, there were too many people trying to talk to me at once. I held up a finger to the cat woman and handed papers to the kid for him to sign. And then I turned my attention as quickly as I could to the guy my age standing a few feet off.
"Do you need any help?" I asked.

Eek. We were kinda in the middle of a ton of people huh? I guess growing up in a sheltered lab made you a lot less cautious of revealing self-information. Everyone always knew everything about me there.
I nodded at the warning glare the girl shot me. "Oops, forgot." I mouthed silently, feeling slightly sheepish. It was so interesting to find someone else who was different, I hadn't even noticed that kid walking up.
I did, however, notice the guy that had stopped a few yards away. The poor guy looked almost frightened of something. I stepped off to the side, giving the red-head some room to help the other two. I guess I could talk to her more later, if she still wanted to talk.

Thank you for backing off, cat woman, I thought to myself. At least she could take a hint. Maybe if she was still here later I could...
...What? Talk? Create a support group for meta-freaks?
But born in a lab? What was...never mind. I'd deal with it later.
I glanced around to see if any of the other tables were vacant, but every volunteer and SPCA shelter worker I saw had at least three or four people hovering around their table, just like the scene around mine. My consolation was the lack of a pack of kids running around--that was at Ranna's table, and I was more than happy to have mine in comparison.
Unable to find a way out of this, I pulled a scrap of paper from my pocket and picked up one of the pens lying around on my table. "Call me later," I said, handing it to the cat woman. "I gotta work this for a few more hours still."
Okay, now I could help the nervous guy behind the kid.

Jr. shrugged and filled out the paperwork and took the puppy in his arm he hoped his aunt/cousin and his mom wouldn't mind, he always wanted a puppy. He disappeared to head back to Uncle Gudo's the old fighter liked dogs, maybe he'd help.

This was a very bad idea, Daire decided as suddenly there was no one else distracting the woman from him. It was a very very bad idea to ever even get her attention. Because now it was on him, and what was he supposed to do with it? What was he supposed to say? It was like the ice was a mile thick and he had no idea how to break it.
Then a shrill mew came from his pocket, and he blinked and suddenly the words were coming out. "I-I found a c-couple of kittens, and they need, um, m-milk. D-do you know where I could get any?"
A tiny grey fuzzy head poked out of his jacket pocket and gave a piteous cry. Quickly Daire scratched the top of its head, partly to comfort it and partly to give his fingers something to do besides tremble.

"Oh wow, that little guy needs food quick." I said suddenly, advancing towards the guy. "Do you have a pen? I know a really good recipe for home made cat milk. It's way better than the kind you can buy at pet stores." The poor little grey kitten looked absolutely pitiful, poor thing.

Hey. Hey. Cute guy asked me first, got it?
"Or he can go to that other stall over there and get some now. I'll be back in a second." Never mind a meeting later--screw this chick. I was here to sell crap and make sure animals got homes, not get a bunch of homemade wacko labrats to take away business. Beat it.

Daire's heart rate jumped to almost double, and he took a step back instinctively as the woman approached, almost tripping over his own cane. Goodness, for a second there he thought she was about to attack him. Hurriedly he fumbled through his pockets, prompting an indignant little mewl from the red tabby kitten in one of his jacket pockets, before he finally turned up a pen from the inside of his jacket and held it out to her in his shaking fingers. "H-here," he managed to stammer.
But then the other woman was walking away, and he held up a finger to stop her, but it was too late. "Um... o-okay..." His hand returned to him, having nothing else to do, so it scratched the back of his neck a little anxiously. Why did he always feel like things got out of control every time he had to interact with other people?

I resisted the urge to hiss. My lip was already curling up of it's own accord and the hair on the back of my neck was standing, though it didn't show. "Do you realize how much crap that commercial stuff has in it? The people who make it must know next to nothing about cats. Most kittens raised on that stuff die within days, or are weak if they live. It's nice to know you'd rather have them die of malnutrition than let someone else help." I snarled irritably, grabbing Soldier's cage. "The stuff I learned to make gives them almost eleven calories per cc of food, you'll be lucky if they get four outta the commercial crap."
